Perceptions and Experiences of Adolescents and Health Cadres Regarding Risky Sexual Behaviors Causing Sexually Transmitted Infections in Adolescents: A Qualitative Study

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are one of the most common women's health challenges among adolescents. This study aims to explore adolescents' and cadres' experiences regarding risky sexual behaviors that can cause sexually transmitted infections using a qualitative approach. The research method used FGD with 40 adolescents aged 10–19 years and 23 health cadres who were selected purposively in Karet Kuningan Village. Interviews with FGD were recorded and then made into interview transcripts and analyzed using Colaizzi's strategy. The results of the study have identified five themes, namely (1) participants' perceptions and experiences of STIs as diseases caused by free sexual activities and changing partners, (2) efforts to avoid contracting STIs are to maintain socializing, personal hygiene, not having free sexual intercourse, maintaining food, and conducting regular check-ups, (3) information support obtained from social media and health workers (4) The perceived obstacles are adolescents' low self-awareness and shy, afraid, and unfriendly attitude of health workers; (5) the needs of participants are the existence of intensive health counseling and health center services involving cadres and parents of adolescents. The results of this study provide useful information in determining policy making, program design, and nursing interventions to prevent the increase in STIs in adolescents. The next research is expected to conduct intervention research by involving parents and community leaders and in accordance with the needs and desires of adolescents with renewable technology approaches such as digitalization and applications
