Abstract

LPKS (Private Job Training Institution) Fujisaki Gakuin Center, located in Cilacap, Central Java, plays a strategic role in preparing prospective Indonesian workers for internship programs in Japan. However, many trainees encounter difficulties adapting to Japanese workplace culture and social environments due to limited intercultural understanding, often resulting in prolonged culture shock and adjustment challenges. Therefore, strengthening the role of Japanese language instructors in fostering intercultural competence is essential. This community engagement program aimed to enhance instructors’ understanding and readiness in preparing prospective interns for cultural adaptation in Japan. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed through a cross-cultural training program involving 11 Japanese language instructors. The activities consisted of expert-led lectures, group discussions, and workplace simulations reflecting real-life situations in Japan. Program effectiveness was evaluated using a 15-item pre-test and post-test questionnaire. The results demonstrated measurable improvements in participants’ intercultural competence, instructional readiness, and confidence, with score increases ranging from approximately 7% to 36% across key indicators. Participants also showed enhanced ability to develop culturally relevant instructional materials and utilize intercultural reference sources in teaching practices. These findings suggest that contextual and reflective cross-cultural training is effective in strengthening instructors’ competencies and supporting the preparation of prospective interns for international work environments. Future programs should be integrated into vocational training curricula and supported by practice-based learning resources and continuous evaluation.
