Abstract

The use of Instagram Story features has become an integral part of students' digital routines for the purposes of technical practice, affective experiences, and the need for social connection. One of the psychological factors relevant to this context is Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). This study aims to examine the relationship between FoMO and the intensity of Instagram Story use among students, both directly and indirectly through users’ engagement, with platform trust positioned as a complementary variable. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlation-explanatory design. The data was collected through an online survey of 290 college students who actively use Instagram Stories, using a Likert scale questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS software. The findings show that FoMO has a positive effect on users’ engagement and Instagram Story usage intensity. Engagement was found to mediate the relationship between FoMO and intensity of use, while platform trust also contributed positively, albeit in a support role. These results show that the intensity of Instagram Story use arises from the interaction between psychological drive, affective engagement, and trust in digital platforms. The study contributes theoretically by extending FoMO's research to the level of temporary and algorithm-based social media features. Practically, these findings highlight the importance of strengthening students' digital literacy to encourage more reflective and conscious use of social media.
